Further south, Andalucia has the longest coastline of any of Spain's regions. This feature, coupled with a hot climate, has made Andalucia an extremely popular tourist destination. However, there is much more to this beautiful region than just the Costa del Sol and the jet-set town of Marbella.
Málaga, probably the first city encountered by foreign visitors to this region, is home to a large and modern international airport. The town itself is always very busy and is packed with shops, restaurants and cafés. Málaga also contains a large number of language schools and makes a good base for exploring the rest of the region.
Seville is home to Europe's second largest cathedral, the 'Santa María de la Sede', and to the Moorish splendours of the Alcazar fortress and the Giralda bell tower. The festival of 'Semana Santa' in the week leading up to Easter Sunday, should not be missed if you are around at that time.
A two hour train journey from Seville is Córdoba, an interesting and historically important town. The 'Mezquita', built in the 8th century AD, became the largest mosque in the Islamic world, before being converted into a cathedral in 1236.
It is in Granada, however, that the most stunning Moorish architecture is to be found. The world famous Alhambra Palace is quite simply breathtaking, and the gardens of Generalife provide an oasis of tranquillity. The town itself is very pleasant and always full of students because of the university.
Canary Islands
These extremely popular islands enjoy excellent weather all year round, and offer visitors a wide range of watersports. The islands make an ideal destination for those who want to combine a beach holiday with their language course.
